Sony WH-1000XM5 Noise-Canceling Wireless Over-Ear Headphones (Black) $398 $248 SAVE $150 FIELD TESTED: Renogy 400W Portable Solar Blanket 2025-09-28 • SEND FEEDBACK | Related: dumb energy, Ecoflow, solar power re: solar power Sprinter van with dual Renogy 400W solar blanket and various I bought Renogy 400W solar blanket to charge my Ecoflow Delta 2 Max while traveling, mainly so that I can"burn" up to 2 kWh of power to heat my van on those cold mornings, using a space heater. Consulting available should you need to spec-out an ideal portable solar system including the storage unit eg Ecoflow, solar panels, wattage/volts/amps, etc, etc. Two panels solve the power-generation problem when parked for multiple days. By using extension cables, the panels can be located 20/30/50 feet away from the van in open sunlight. As shown near van right, two of the 400W panels are feeding into an Ecoflow Delta 2 Max. With 10 kWh of LFP batteries are onboard my van for 8 years now, they are charged only by running the engine, so multiple days of space heater is a non-starter. With the Ecoflow unit, I can charge my main batteries via the Ecoflow, or charge the Ecoflow via the main batteries eg while driving. With two of these solar blankets, I can feed power into the Ecoflow, charging it and passing the excess through to the main batteries. Peak power can exceed 630W or so — about 3 hours to charge an empty 2 kWh Ecoflow. Without the invasive and foolish idea of mounting of solar panels on the van. Ecoflow Delta 2 Max at B&H Photo Ecoflow Delta 2 Max @AMAZON Renogy 200W solar blanket @AMAZON Renogy 400w solar blanket @AMAZON Field testing the Renogy 400W Solar Blanket The Renogy 400W solar blanket is fantastically well designed. Weighing only 16.1 pounds, it has carry handle and backpack straps and a built in zippered pouch into which cables can be coiled including up to a 30 foot or so solar cable extension (not supplied by Renogy). My only minor complaint is the IQ test of how to fold it back up again — 16 squares become one compact 16.1 pound portable unit. Being symmetric, it is non-obvious how to fold it, plus the snap connectors tend to get hidden as part of the folding, adding to the confusion. Renogy should using color coding or arrows or some such reminding the order to fold it — confusing enough in daylight until mastered, dim or dark makes it harder. I have mastered it now, but my suggestion is to mark the damn thing somehow, or memorize the order early-on. As to long term durability, only usage over time can speak to that. For example, a row of the blanket crapping-out by unfolding/refolding damaging internal wiring could lead to partial or total failure. Satisfaction I used the dual Renogy 400W solar blankets extensively to charge not just the 2 kWh Ecoflow Delta 2 Max* in the Sprinter van, but also 3 other units in a mountain cabin, all over several weeks of usage. * Delta 2 Max has two XT60 inputs each acccepting up to 15A @ 60V. Each panel should be run separately into its own port. A parallel connector can run them both into one port but amperage can slightly exceed 15A in the strongest sunlight, so separate cables from each is preferable. Do NOT run in series using the Delta 2 Max. Optimizing power — orientation matters Renogy does NOT spell out the optimal orientation, and this matters hugely under some conditions. The 4 X 4 16-square design is actually 4 in-parallel rows, with each row producing *in parallel* with the others. That means that you must be aware of rows vs columns. A shadow that crosses even one square of each row kills power output but that same shadow at 90° may cross only one row and thus retain 75% or more of the power output. In other words, you might get 40W or 250W, simply by orienting 90° differently. These rows run parallel to the widest central main fabric seam, so set up accordingly. If you are not sure, simple shade squares and see for yourself the HUGE difference in power production. TIP: do not let some of the squares of a row bend away from the others (different angle for each square). This mashes power output. Ensure that all squares of a row are in line (parallel) to each other. The difference can be 1.5X to 2X or more. Solar production over the day Peak power comes from placing the blanket at 90° to the sun. Even at dawn, power production can be very high if this is done, but the blanket (and all solar panels) must be continuously held at 90° to the sun to maximize power — impractical. Many situations offer no practical way to hold the blanket in an ideal orientation. In practice, the easiest solution, especially if one wishes to walk away, is to lay the blanket on the ground, ideally on a slight slope. When I tested the blanket I was on a playa, flat as a pancake, so these power production figures below are below what could be produced when optimally oriented to the sun (impossible to do over hours of the day without constant attention). Accordingly, I deem these figures a realistic everyday case unless one spends the day catering to orientation. Peak production tested with optimal orientation appears to be ~325W for a few hours of the day if oriented optimally. With the sun high in mid summer, perhaps such production could be seen for 3-4 hours, and likely somewhat higher. Average and total output Conditions vary. Cloudy conditions massively reduce this power output. Results shown are for slightly less than half a day (4 hours shown, 9 hours or so for day eg to 5 PM). Total power production is twice shown (using 2 blankets). Rough estimated total kWH from this data is: 2 X 250W X 4.5 = 2.2 kWh + 2 X 140W X 4 = 1.1 kWh = about 3.3 kWh In other words, a single 400W blanket on a sunny day left flat should produce about 1.6 kWh — enough to mostly but not completely charge an empty 2 kWh unit like the Ecoflow Delta 2 Max. In practice, cloudy weather and other factors argue strongly for dual 400W blankets.
