Aurora Rodriguez Skilled Trades and Readiness (STAR) Program Graduate in Construction View more Aurora Rodriguez Northern Virginia, USA Skilled Trades and Readiness (STAR) Program Graduate in Construction Aurora Rodriguez has already built the foundation for a strong career. She credits her mom for giving her the strength and the gumption to begin pursuing her goals and dreams early. Her mom came to the United States from Honduras right after 9/11, and has worked the same job for the same salary since she began, working days and nights and taking the bus everywhere. This inspired Aurora to aim higher. She finished high school online so she could start working full time her sophomore year. “Everything I do is so she can have a better life and retirement.” Aurora always knew she wanted to work in the trades and began in welding. However, it became a challenge physically and financially to continue that work. She moved into logistical roles, yet a career in the trades still called to Aurora. That’s when she heard about Google’s Skilled Trades and Readiness (STAR) Program in Construction at Northern Virginia Community College. She completed the program in 2024, which has led to more project management opportunities at her job and a desire to go back to school and earn a four-year degree. Aurora’s mom is surely beaming with pride. “I remember the tough times, that no matter what, my mom made sure I pushed through.” “I came from a logistical background from Amazon to UPS stores. I was trying to prepare going back to school...and then I came upon the STAR Program.” “The STAR Program is making a difference in communities. It is giving opportunities to people who probably felt stuck just like I did.” Aurora Rodriguez STAR Program Graduate in Construction Marco Ynema Googler, Site Lead at Eemshaven Data Center View more Marco Ynema Eemshaven, Netherlands Googler, Site Lead at Eemshaven Data Center Marco Ynema, site lead at our Eemshaven data center in the Netherlands, is focused on growth, whether it’s for himself in his career, or in his proficiency as a musician and audio engineer, or in helping others. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Marco’s background is in computer science and audio engineering. He had ambitions for a career in music. Looking for stability as his family grew, he opted to pursue computer science and IT roles instead. Marco arrived at Google in 2005, contracting as a data center technician, but he was quickly hired a year later, moving to the U.S. to work with teams on site reliability engineering and software engineering. When he heard Google was building the Eemshaven data center, he shifted back to working within operations in the Netherlands. “The best place to raise my two daughters,” he says. As a site lead, he's observed Google’s evolution in the community, becoming more involved in outreach, including building school curriculum. Marco was involved in launching an apprenticeship program for local secondary institutions, hosting students at the Eemshaven data center, which led to full-time roles for some. In addition to seeing Google grow our commitments to the community, he enjoys helping people grow. “What I love most is to work together with my colleagues to build something and grow what we're working on and improve.” And music still plays a leading role in Marco’s life. He played in multiple bands over the years. Marco even built a recording studio in his backyard, ceaselessly focused on growing his talent. “As we grow our presence, we see more interactions with the local community because we are part of the community. I also see it as our obligation to actually ensure that we are not only reaping the benefits from being here in this country, but by contributing by increasing infrastructure and creating opportunities and jobs and other things.” Marco Ynema Googler, Site Lead at Eemshaven Data Center Rachel Huang Corporate Account Manager at Junyi Academy View more Rachel Huang Taipei, Taiwan Corporate Account Manager at Junyi Academy In agricultural communities in Taiwan, it was once tough to get some families excited about their children’s education. If a child wasn’t performing well at school, they were always needed back on the family farm. Yet Rachel Huang, corporate account manager at Junyi Academy, has seen a marked shift in that thinking, along with a growing acceptance to embrace technology’s role in the learning process as parents have come to see how education expands the future opportunities of their children. She has a strong interest and background in global affairs and wants to put Taiwan in a better geopolitical position by educating its youth and improving the talent pool. She feels that change can begin through Junyi Academy. Junyi Academy is a nonprofit organization in Taipei whose mission is to provide personalized content to children that enables them to learn in an environment that is ideal for them. One way the academy achieves this is by training teachers to incorporate e-learning into their classrooms. “In a traditional classroom, all students are expected to follow the same pace, which can be challenging for those who either struggle to keep up or are ready to move ahead,” Rachel says. “This [e-learning] approach has led to significant improvements in students’ academic performance, as they can engage with the material in a way that suits their learning style and speed.” Rachel shared a story of a student who was struggling in class and had parents who couldn’t provide much support at home. The student’s teacher, who had participated in the Junyi program, felt the student could benefit from more screen time after school. However, the student’s mother was skeptical, worried her son would use the technology to play games. Yet the teacher built trust, using the technology to help the student improve his study habits, while also nurturing a relationship with the mother, explaining the technology and program through multiple evening calls.
