Le déclin de la population a déjà commencé dans 63 pays. A elle seule, la Chine pourrait perdre jusqu’à 800 millions d’habitants sur les 1,4 milliards actuels. A l’autre extrême, la croissance du continent africain est encore rapide. Sa population pourrait atteindre près de 4 milliards d’habitants contre 1,5 milliards aujourd’hui. Les pays restants, dont la France, atteindront bientôt leur pic démographique. Leur croissance actuelle est liée davantage à l’immigration qu’à la natalité.
