Ways to fund your education Financing a Yale Nursing degree typically involves multiple sources. Below is an overview of the primary categories of support available to prospective students. Scholarships Merit- and need-based awards from YSN granted at admission with no repayment required. Applicants are considered as part of the review process; award amounts vary based on academic achievement, financial need, and program of study. Loan Programs For eligible U.S. citizens or permanent residents, Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans and private loans with competitive rates; international students can use the Yale Grad & Professional Loan up to the cost of attendance. External Funding NHSC, Nurse Corps, military benefits, and other third-party scholarships and grants may be available to eligible students. YSN's financial aid team can help you identify relevant programs and assist with the application process. Scholarships Merit-based program scholarships To help make this education possible for future leaders, YSN offers program scholarships to many outstanding applicants who demonstrate strong academic achievement and leadership potential. Merit-based scholarship aid is awarded through the admissions process. All incoming students domestic and international are considered through a holistic review process. There is no separate scholarship application required for YSN scholarships. Need-based program scholarships In addition to merit-based funding, YSN also awards scholarships to those who demonstrate financial need. U.S. citizens and permanent residents must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in a timely way to be considered. International applicants may be considered for need-based funding by submitting a YSN financial aid form. Applicants will receive more information by email about required forms and submission timing. Student loan programs Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan The Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan helps cover a student's expenses without requiring a demonstration of financial need. Students can borrow up to $20,500 per year. Interest accrues while enrolled and is added to the principal. To apply, complete the FAFSA. For current interest rates and the origination fee, visit studentaid.gov. Alternative / private student loans Yale continues to explore multiple financing options comparable to or better than the former Grad PLUS Loan, which was discontinued for new students as of July 2026. Students have several alternative loan options with competitive terms, and some with no origination fees. Students interested in exploring private loan options are advised to review the options available at ELM Select. Other sources of aid National Health Service Corps The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) addresses shortages of health professionals in underserved communities across the U.S. Eligible nursing students may qualify for scholarships and loan repayment programs in exchange for a service commitment in designated Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs). Learn more about the NHSC External scholarships Prospective YSN students are encouraged to explore external sources of funding and scholarship search tools.
