Safety Parents and Teens User Safety Wellbeing Safety A Better Internet Starts with Education: Introducing the Discord Player's Guide and Wellbeing Principles Introducing the Discord Player’s Guide ‍For years, Discord Community Resources was the go-to guide for volunteer community moderators that was built by the community, for the community. It was full of wisdom about running servers, handling conflict, and keeping spaces healthy. Though we loved what it was, it was focused on one community role.  We stepped back and asked a broader question. What would it look like to take that idea further? Not just for volunteer community moderators, but for everyone. The Discord Player’s Guide is our answer.  It’s a growing library of educational modules, resources, and practical guidance designed to help people navigate online spaces with more confidence and clarity. It is for everyone: from teens and parents, to volunteer community moderators and anyone else who wants to better understand how to communicate, make decisions, and show up online. The goal is not to tell people what to think or how to behave. It’s to give them the tools to understand what is happening and respond thoughtfully. We are launching with our first module, Communicating with Empathy Online, developed in partnership with Crisis Text Line. This module focuses on how empathy shows up across digital communication and how to support others in ways that are thoughtful, not reactive.  We’re also launching with two separate tipsheets: How to Protect Your Account from Scams and What to Expect When Reaching Out to Crisis Text Line and publishing our first of three resources in partnership with ECPAT as announced last month, What to Do When Online Banter Goes Too Far.  Additional modules are already in development and will roll out throughout this year, with continued expansion over time. These will cover areas like volunteer community moderator wellbeing, digital literacy, scams and fraud awareness, AI literacy, and healthy communication. We are building these resources alongside partners including the Christchurch Call Foundation and GamerSafer because helping people thrive online is not something one platform can do alone. The Discord Player’s Guide is free, open to everyone, and designed to keep growing. ‍The Wellbeing Principles Behind It All Alongside the Discord Player’s Guide, we are publishing our Wellbeing Principles to make our approach to user wellbeing more transparent. These principles guide how we think about product design, policy development, partnerships, and community support. Gaming fosters meaningful connection - We believe that gaming and online communities foster transferable life skills and meaningful social connections.  Championing user agency & transparency - We value our users’ privacy, safety, and autonomy, and recognize that, in addition to coming from different cultural backgrounds, users may have varying developmental needs. Centering mental health & digital wellness - We recognize that mental health support, digital literacy and digital wellness are important to navigating digital spaces.  Wellbeing by design - We work toward solutions that deliver meaningful safety improvements and preserve what makes Discord the best place to play games and hang out with friends. These are not abstract ideas. They are meant to show up in what we build and how we make decisions. The Discord Player’s Guide is the embodiment of these principles. Why Skills Matter This work reflects a broader view of what it takes to create healthier online experiences. Moderation, from managing harmful behavior and reviewing content to enforcement actions like removals and bans, will always be central to how we help people have safer experiences on Discord, alongside policies like our Community Guidelines. Wellbeing starts with helping people build real digital skills and supporting the kind of awareness, confidence, and judgment that shape how they show up online. The Discord Player’s Guide is designed to do that in a practical and accessible way, and the Wellbeing Principles are there to show how we think and guide the work we do. When people — at any age — have better skills and awareness, they're better equipped to make the most of their time online. The Discord Player's Guide is one part of how we support that. Because when people feel more confident, more informed, and more in control, Discord is better for everyone. We recognize the meaningful role Discord plays in teens' lives, and we’re committed to staying true to what they enjoy and to being a place they want to return to. Fulfilling that commitment means working to provide safer spaces that are shaped with teens in mind, and designed to help give them agency over their experience. On Safer Internet Day, we want to be clear on where we stand. Discord is committed to building safer experiences for teens, investing in this work proactively, and doing it in ways that respect our users’ privacy and maintaining what makes our platform so uniquely Discord.  ‍That’s why, starting in early March, we are proactively rolling out safety features worldwide that will help ensure age-appropriate experiences for everyone while preserving the genuine community atmosphere that makes Discord special. These updates introduce stronger default safety settings and clearer boundaries around age-restricted experiences through age assurance. Expanding age-appropriate safety experiences worldwide At the end of last year, we launched age assurance and teen-by-default experiences in the UK and Australia. In the UK, these updates helped us meet new regulatory requirements for online services. In Australia, where Discord is considered a communications service and not subject to the Social Media Minimum Age requirements, we saw this moment as an opportunity to further demonstrate our ongoing commitment to teen safety by proactively providing users with a teen-appropriate default experience. This work has helped us understand how we can build age-appropriate protections that work for teens globally, while ensuring our user's experience on Discord remains easy and accessible. Now, we are expanding our age assurance toolkit and teen-by-default safety protections to the rest of the world. This includes stronger default safety settings, filters for potentially sensitive content, and age-appropriate access to spaces and features designed to support safer experience across Discord. Most of these protections are already in place by default. Age assurance is only required if a user wants to access age-restricted content and features or update the teen-by-default safety settings. For adult users, this can be completed through a straightforward, privacy-forward process. This is an important step in making safer, more enjoyable and age-appropriate experiences for teens everywhere, not just specific regions. This work was done to help teens feel supported and in control of their experience, while giving families greater confidence and ensuring adults can seamlessly access the features they want. When would users need to verify their age group? Users are only prompted to verify their age group when they attempt to access certain age-restricted content, settings, or features. After completing age assurance, users won’t be asked to verify again for future age-restricted actions. A user may be prompted to verify their age group if they attempt to: Unblur media flagged by our Sensitive Content Filters or attempt to change any of the default Sensitive Content Filter settings to “Show” sensitive content. Turn off Message Requests (they are enabled by default to help you screen out unwanted DMs from your DM list). Access age-restricted channels and servers. Speak in a stage channel. Toggle on age-restricted commands setting. ‍Importantly, this does not mean everyone will need to confirm their age just to use Discord. Many people can use Discord exactly as they do today, without ever being asked to confirm their age. Default safety settings for everyone Here's how this works: Everyone starts with our robust safety features turned on, regardless of age. We call this "teen-by-default" because these settings establish a clear safety baseline designed with teens in mind, with flexibility for adults to customize their experience. Adults can always choose to verify their age and change them, or leave the settings as-is. Unless a user is confirmed to be an adult, these safety settings stay in place and can’t be changed. The default settings include: Content Filters: Discord users will need to be age-assured as adults in order to unblur sensitive content or turn off the setting. Age-gated Spaces: Only users who are age-assured as adults will be able to access age-restricted channels, servers, and app commands.  Message Request Inbox: Direct messages from people a user …
