Deep Saini Dear members of the McGill community, Six years ago, on the cusp of McGill’s bicentennial, we launched Made by McGill: the Campaign for Our Third Century and called upon our global network of alumni and friends to come together in support of McGill’s academic community: the students, researchers and innovators whose work drives progress and changes lives. The results were extraordinary: nearly 114,000 donors answered the call, and we raised more than $2 billion in philanthropic support. It is an achievement we can all be proud of, and demonstrates a commitment to McGill that is inspiring and humbling. But the world has changed in dramatic ways since 2019: a global pandemic reminded us of the fragility of life, and underscored the critical role that research and education can play in solving complex problems. At the same time, a rise in geopolitical conflict, populism, and disinformation is threatening the pillars of our democracies. Increasingly catastrophic effects from the climate crisis have displaced populations. And the rapid growth of artificial intelligence has presented us with technological opportunities but also ethical dilemmas. To address these changes, we have now launched Make your mark, a new phase of our campaign, and extended our philanthropic goal to $3 billion. Great universities like McGill need to rise to the challenges the world is facing and be leaders in society as we search for solutions. And McGill can lead, with your support.
