This new exhibition focuses on the well-known Bochum doctor Carl Arnold Kortum (1745–1824). Most people associate Carl Arnold Kortum with his satirical ‘Jobsiade’. Yet there is far more to this famous Bochum citizen than his role as the creator of a literary classic. The exhibition at the Botanic Garden focuses on the lesser-known naturalist Carl Arnold Kortum and shows how closely his botanical studies were linked to his medical and scientific work. CHILI EXHIBITION 2026 For anyone who loves a bit of a kick, our chilli exhibition is back again this year, featuring 150 different varieties from all over the world – we look forward to seeing you there! More infos UPDATE: REDESIGNING THE SOUTH AFRICA HOUSE Our South Africa House is currently undergoing a major refurbishment to showcase the country’s fascinating plant diversity in an even more impressive way. The exhibition focuses on South Africa’s main biomes. At its heart lies the Succulent Karoo, featuring a small quiver tree forest that is already taking shape. Surrounding it, the unique flora of the fynbos, the South African savannah and the coastal forests comes to life. Beer has been delighting humanity for over 10,000 years—and its history is as multifaceted as its ingredients. In addition to barley, water, hops, and yeast, there are many other ingredients that alter the taste, extend the shelf life, or enhance the intoxicating effect. The exhibition “Botany in Beer – More Than Hops and Malt” invites you to get to know beer from its botanical side. Learn how starch, herbs, and modern breeding techniques shape the craft of brewing, and discover exotic beer varieties you've probably never heard of before. Let yourself be surprised and immerse yourself in a fascinating world – and maybe you'll discover your new favorite beer! The exhibition “Botany in Beer: More than Hops and Malt” is on loan from the Botanical Garden of Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen. EXHIBITION Fauna meets flora - 15.03.25 - 31.10.2026, viewing is free. From lithe snakes to curious owls and cheeky ravens to playing wolf pups - with her lifelike bronze sculptures, Münster artist Waltraud Hustermeier brings the animal kingdom to life amidst the plant world of the Botanic Garden. The sculptures are spread across the entire outdoor area. So embark on a journey of discovery! More Information EXHIBITION Green, Rocks, Earth - Our Changing World - viewing is free - An illustrated exhibition on the evolutionary history of plants - from the beginning of life in the oceans, the conquest of the land, the breathtaking new diversity of plants to us humans and the dramatic effects of climate change today. The exhibition was created as part of a priority programme funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG): MAdLand – Molecular Adaptation to Land. Higlights Desert House More than just cacti! In the Desert House you will find a variety of plants that have managed to adapt to life in hot and dry locations. Highlights Tropical Glasshouse If you have never been to a tropical rainforest, you can get a small impression of the lush greenery in the humid tropics in our Tropical Glasshouse. Highlights South Africa House The bird of paradise flower is just one of more than 21,000 plant species found in South Africa. Get a small impression of the unique flora of this diverse country. [The South Africa House is currently being redesigned and is therefore closed to visitors until further notice.] Highlights Tertiary Pond The Tertiary pond gives an impression of the ‘exotic’ past of Central Europe during the Tertiary period (approx. 70 - 2 million years ago). At that time, plants grew here that are now extinct in Europe, but still occur in North America and East Asia, in some cases with many species. These include bald cypresses, sequoias and magnolias. HIGHLIGHTS Chinese Garden The Chinese Garden is located in the centre of the Botanical Garden. As one of the most beautiful and authentic Chinese gardens in Germany, this very special cultural gem is known far beyond Bochum. Highlights Alpinum In our large Alpinum we display plants from the mountains of Europe, Asia and North and South America. Highlights Dune Dunes are not only beautiful landscapes, but also habitats for rare species and natural coastal defences. Find out here how dunes are formed and how they change over time. Highlights Herbaceous Bed Inspired by the wild and natural-looking ‘prairie garden style’ of Dutch landscape designer Piet Oudolf, we are constantly trying out new species and cultivars that are better adapted to our increasingly dry summers. Highlights Medicinal Garden Medicinal plants unfold their various effects through their different ingredients. In our medicinal garden you will find many well-known and lesser-known medicinal plants that have been used by humans since time immemorial. Highlights Lotos Pond The Indian lotus flower has deep religious significance for Hindus and Bhuddists. This charismatic plant has also become famous for its self-cleaning leaves (‘Lotus Effect®’), from which water simply rolls off. In addition to the lotus flower, you will also find various water lilies and other aquatic plants in the lotus pond. Highlights Ourdoor Succulent Display In the frost-free months of the year, we display a large number of succulent (= water-storing) plants from all over the world in the beds bordering the desert house to the south and north.
