The world is facing dramatic transformations. From increasing political polarization and emerging technologies to persistent social inequities and the sustainability crisis, the challenges that await Arts graduates are more complex than ever before. These are urgent issues – but also opportunities for positive change. In the Faculty of Arts, we are cultivating the leaders of tomorrow: researchers with the creativity to transcend boundaries, and graduates who can not only navigate rapid changes, but help drive them. Across a multitude of disciplines, we stimulate students’ curiosity, build community and graduate creative thinkers able to articulate values and solve complex problems across traditional boundaries. Download: Case for Support for the Faculty of Arts The Arts Opportunities Fund Directing support to the Arts Opportunities Fund allows us to respond to emerging opportunities quickly and strategically. These may include: Providing experiential learning opportunities, from internships to student journals to student-organized research events Funding for early-career researchers, especially graduate students and post-doctoral fellows Incorporating technology into modernized teaching and learning spaces Support for visiting speakers, conferences, and student mobility opportunities that increase engagement and promote knowledge sharing The student experience The Faculty of Arts is redesigning the undergraduate student experience with an emphasis on active learning, community building, and approaching complex problems with creative, multifaceted thinking. With your support, we will: Launch a re-designed Foundation Program that revolutionizes the first-year experience Fund the Office of Arts Education, which disseminates the best practices in pedagogy, benefitting instructors and their students across every program Further leverage the Arts Internship Office and provide more opportunities for experiential learning – in Montreal, across Canada, and around the world Technology, society and democracy Our faculty members are engaged in cutting-edge research in their fields, influencing policy related to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the impacts of media on democracy. Your support will help us: Build on our current efforts to grapple with the ethical challenges of technology Develop real-time insight into the role of media and emerging technologies in shaping democracy and public life, through research and outreach at the Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy Embed ethical reasoning into the education of technologists of the future so that they keep societal impacts front of mind as they innovate Leverage digital humanities tools to facilitate the ongoing inter-generational transmission of culture Informing policy development Our researchers inform policy at the local, national and global levels on issues of governance and sustainability – ranging from housing in Montreal, to energy and healthcare within Canada, to international peace and security. Your support will help us: Contribute to knowledge and policy affecting international development, human migration and refugees through research as well as the Centre for International Peace and Security Studies and new resources for studies on women, peace and security Increase capacity for effective policy work in Canada and abroad through the teaching, research and outreach of the Max Bell School of Public Policy Establish a dedicated centre for data-driven social science research that builds on the existing Centre on Population Dynamics Diverse perspectives, enriching contexts The Faculty of Arts is committed to advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, addressing anti-Black racism and promoting gender equity. We are taking concrete action through faculty appointments and academic program development.
